I spent Monday tidying up a slide deck for the board of directors. Sometimes it’s really nice to just spend a few hours pushing pixels around until everything feels neat and tidy.

John and I had a collaboration session on the YHCR interface improvements. It was fruitful; we both came away with some new perspectives that wouldn’t have happened without taking the time to dig into each other’s thinking.

We’ve got a few members of the design team embedded with delivery teams within Ofsted at the moment and it’s been inspiring to see how adaptable, autonomous, and collaborative they have been when parachuted into an organisation that most of them haven’t had involvement with before.

Why do the organisations that most need to act like water so often resemble treacle?

Chanelle walked me through her self-initiated Board of Dreams™. It’s both wonderful and daunting to see someone bring you a huge list of the things they want to achieve. Our challenge is to turn it together from big headline goals to achievable and bitesize pieces — then get started and maintain momentum.

I’ve spotted a couple of people on Twitter discussing weeknotes lately. In particular Lou Downe asked who people write them for. There were some interesting answers.

I think of my weeknotes as publishing little bits of open source thought. Just like the tonnes of OS code available, they may likely never be of use to anybody else — but they may occasionally be just what someone needs. And they’re always there for me to look back on and reflect. It also feels quite healthy to be reminded that not everything you put into the world has to be useful or beautiful to someone else.

I added Rob Beckett’s book to my reading list. Looking forward to seeing another person’s experience on being a working class person in an industry dominated by middle class folks.
